The Dawn of a New Era: Will AI Replace SEO & Search Engines?
The January 4th intelligist AI newsletter
As AI's reach advances, one of the "sacred cows" of the internet is being threatened: search engines (and their optimization).
It's a topic that is becoming increasingly important, especially as the masses start to use AI models such as ChatGPT for their information needs.
In a recent LinkedIn post, NYU Professor Conor Grennan highlighted this significant shift in the digital landscape: the transition from optimizing content for search engines to adapting it for AI models.
This change is the sign of a profound transformation not only in how content is created but in how regular people use the internet.
Many questions arise at the heart of what we know as the internet today. For example, as the AI race rumbles on, it is impossible not to ask: is the reign of Google as the supreme search authority coming to an end?
As Google scrambles to put out AI models that are as good and as popular as ChatGPT and Claude, it is inevitable to wonder what the future holds.
Optimizing for Generative AI and SEO: Insights
Grennan delves deeper into the evolving relationship between generative AI and SEO. The way he describes it, we are currently in a landscape where the optimization for AI search engines like ChatGPT, Bing, and Bard is shrouded in mystery.
Groundbreaking research is beginning to reveal some actionable strategies. These insights are especially crucial for digital marketing teams grappling with the enigma of SEO in the age of AI.
Five Critical Lessons from Cutting-Edge Research
Grennan highlighted five key lessons from a recent Search Engine Journal study. In theory, applying these techniques could ensure that your content is more likely to be cited by an AI model.
Incorporate Relevant Statistics: Statistics enhance content visibility significantly, as evidenced by a 30-40% improvement in Position-Adjusted Word Count and a 15-30% boost in Subjective Impression metrics. In other words, AI models love data.
Add Credible Quotes and Citations: Including high-quality quotes and citations in content can also elevate visibility by similar margins. Again, apparent authenticity is important.
Optimize for Content Fluency and Simplicity: Simplifying content boosts its visibility by 15-30%. Using tools such as the Hemingway writing app, you can ensure your language is simple and has a universal level.
Apply Domain-Specific Optimizations: Tailoring SEO strategies to specific content domains can enhance effectiveness. For example, authoritative language matches historical content well, while citations enhance factual queries.
Focus on Low-Ranked Websites: Lower-ranked websites can see a dramatic 115.1% increase in visibility by employing these strategies, particularly citing sources.
Revolutionizing SEO: The Impact of “GEO”
These strategies stem from what researchers from Princeton University, Georgia Tech, Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi referred to as the Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) technique, demonstrating effectiveness in enhancing website visibility in AI search engines.
They claim that the technique can boost visibility by up to 40%, with a remarkable ability to elevate lower-ranked websites by 115%, challenging the dominance of big corporate sites in search results.
This research indicates a significant shift in SEO dynamics, with AI search engines valuing content and presentation differently than traditional search engines. Once-effective strategies may no longer have the same effect, requiring a reevaluation and adaptation of SEO practices for the AI era.
Now, this might not mean that Google's days are counted. Indeed, it is impossible to count out one of the most powerful corporations ever. In fact, Google is well aware of the need to leverage its current authority as the world's premier search engine.
It does mean, though, that while Google is scurrying to put together an AI model to "rule them all," other models are gaining huge ground. Furthermore, the explosion of AI is changing users' behavior and expectations regarding finding information and data online.
Whatever way you look at it, we are undoubtedly in an era of unprecedented, rapid change.
