OpenAI relentlessly pursuing superhuman AI, Bezos weighs in on AI, and more
The December 15 intelligist AI newsletter

Greetings, intelligists!
Today, while driving kids around all over town, I listened to Jeff Bezos on Lex Fridman’s long-form podcast. I admit I had never heard the podcast before, and found Fridman to be a pleasant and jovial interviewer. He didn’t ask a single challenging question, but his rapport with Bezos relaxed the Amazon mogul enough that he let his guard down and gave a lot of valuable insights into business, technology, and life in general.
On our newsletter page, you can see an AI-generated rendition of old Jeff Bezos in space in the future.
The lessons learned: kids love work if you give them no other option (he talked about how working on his grandfather’s farm every summer for years was his happiest memory). AI will take over the world (and if we are lucky, it will make it a better place), and that we need to have a day-1 mindset every day if we want to make our projects succeed (he provided many other actionable types of advice for entrepreneurs).

Jeff Bezos on AI: Discovery Over Invention
Jeff Bezos discusses the nature of AI with Lex Fridman
Jeff Bezos gave the public a rare glimpse into his mindset and visions for the future.
In a candid and insightful conversation with long-form podcaster Lex Fridman, Jeff Bezos shared his insights on AI, classifying large language models like ChatGPT as discoveries rather than inventions. He likens them to astronomical discoveries made using telescopes, emphasizing their surprising and evolving capabilities.
In his nearly two-and-a-half-hour session with Fridman, Bezos emphasized his belief that AI will continue to dramatically change the world in ways we can’t even imagine right now. He also remains optimistic about AI's role in the future of humanity and its potential to assist humanity in reducing harm. Also notably, hespelled out his vision for colonizing space.
I should note that the interview was largely friendly in tone, and there were no controversial questions, such as questioning Amazon’s impact on the environment, its notoriously unpleasant warehouse working environment and turnover, its tax strategy, or its impact on small businesses. Intel's Strategy Against NVIDIA's CUDA
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger challenges NVIDIA's CUDA dominance
Since the AI world doesn’t have enough conflict or intrigue, chipmaking giants Nvidia and Intel are now throwing down.
Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger has made bold statements against NVIDIA's CUDA platform, suggesting that the industry aims to end its dominance in AI. Currently, Nvidia is virtually monopolizing AI processing with their graphics processors (GPUs), which is spurring other companies to come up with alternatives.
Intel is gearing up with its Gaudi accelerators and next-gen Gaudi 3, aiming for a 2024 launch, as it navigates a competitive landscape dominated by NVIDIA's CUDA. This rivalry highlights the shifting strategies in AI hardware development, with implications for the broader AI technology ecosystem. Read More: WCCF Tech
OpenAI's Pursuit of Superhuman AI Control
OpenAI develops frameworks to control superintelligent AI
Now that the pesky old board is out of the way, OpenAI is relentlessly pursuing AGI and other superintelligent AI types. Worry not, pessimists; the good folks at OpenAI are doing so while thinking about how to keep it under control (I am not sure if I am being sarcastic or not).
OpenAI's Superalignment team is working on controlling AI that is smarter than humans. This effort involves developing governance and control frameworks for superintelligent AI systems.
The team's approach involves guiding advanced AI models with weaker ones to ensure safe and aligned behavior. OpenAI is investing significantly in this area, with a $10 million grant program to support research on superintelligent alignment. This initiative underscores the growing importance of aligning AI development with human values and safety concerns. Read More: TechCrunch
